List and segment limits in Klaviyo
What are list and segment limits?
To keep Klaviyo fast and reliable, there is a maximum number of lists and segments that can be created in each account. You may see warnings or be blocked from creating new lists or segments once your account reaches its limit.
For most accounts, the default limits are:
Item | Limit |
Total lists in an account | Up to 1,000 lists |
Total active segments in an account | Up to 1,000 active segments |
Starred segments | No separate cap (counted within the segment limit) |
Inactive segments | No limit |
Criteria (filters) per segment | Up to 100 criteria |
A separate rolling creation limit also applies: by default, you can create up to 1,250 lists and 1,250 segments in any 7-day period. Lists or segments you have deleted, and segments you have deactivated, still count toward this limit until they are more than 7 days old.
For What someone has done (or not done) conditions, event filters that accept multiple values share a default limit of 500 values across the segment. If you exceed this limit, reduce the number of filter values before creating the segment or saving a changed definition.
Some accounts may have different limits due to legacy configurations or approved overrides.
How can I tell when I’m approaching my limit?
When you are close to your limit:
- A warning banner appears on the Lists & segments page when you are within 50 of the list or active segment count limit. It shows your current count for the type approaching its limit.
When you reach your limit:
- If you try to create a new list or segment after you’ve reached the cap, you’ll see a warning explaining that your account has hit its limit.
- For a list or active segment count limit, you cannot create more of that type until you free up space or your limit is increased. Reaching one count limit does not prevent you from creating the other type if it is still below its own limits.
No existing lists or segments are automatically deleted as part of this enforcement.
If a warning says you have created too many lists or segments recently, you have reached the rolling creation limit. Deleting or deactivating items does not reset it. Wait until older creations fall outside the 7-day period, or contact Klaviyo Support to request a higher limit.
Creating more lists or segments after reaching a count limit
If you’ve reached your list or active segment count limit, you have 2 options:
- Free up space by deleting lists or deleting or deactivating segments
- Review your Lists & segments page for lists or segments you no longer use. Before deleting or deactivating one, check whether campaigns, flows, forms, ad syncs, or other features depend on it. These actions can affect those features, and deletion cannot be undone.
- To delete a list or segment, open its 3-dot menu and select Delete List or Delete Segment. Review the warning, then click Delete.
- To keep a segment’s definition for later, open its 3-dot menu and select Deactivate segment. Review the warning, then click Deactivate. The segment moves to Inactive segments.
- Once your count is below the relevant limit and the page reflects the updated count, you can create new lists or segments again, provided you have not also reached the rolling creation limit.
- Request a higher limit (for eligible use cases)
- If you have a legitimate business need for more lists or segments (for example, complex multi-region setups or large product catalogs), you can contact Klaviyo Support.
- In your request, include:
- Your account name or ID
- Why you need a higher limit and how you use lists/segments today
- How many additional lists or segments you’re requesting
Klaviyo will review and may approve a conditional increase based on your use case. Limits are raised in controlled increments to ensure performance and reliability for your account and the broader platform.
Best practices to stay within limits
- Consolidate similar segments instead of creating many near-duplicates.
- Use segment conditions (e.g., properties, engagement criteria) rather than separate lists when possible.
- Periodically review and clean up old, unused lists and segments.
- Use inactive segments to store definitions you don’t need to run actively, without counting against the active segment cap. To use one again, you need room under the active segment count limit before reactivating the segment.
These practices help you stay within limits while keeping your account easier to manage and more performant over time.
