How to Enable Auto-Upgrade Billing

Overview

You have the option to turn on auto-upgrade billing for both email and SMS plans in your Klaviyo account. This feature affords you the opportunity to avoid hitting your monthly sending limits and continue to send SMS, email, and automated flows unimpeded. This option is especially advantageous during important marketing windows throughout the year where you may send email or SMS at higher volumes. By turning auto-upgrade on, you will not be inhibited by limitations preventing you from continuing to communicate with your customers.

It’s important to note that if you turn on auto-upgrades and need to upload new customer profiles, we suggest that you momentarily set your flows to manual so that you do not accidentally auto-upgrade your plan.

Enable SMS or Email Auto-Upgrades via Your Billing Preferences

You can change your auto-upgrade settings for your email or SMS subscription any time by visiting Account > Billing > Billing Preferences.

Navigate to your account name in the upper-righthand corner, and click on Account from the dropdown.
Then, click on Billing in the menu, and choose Billing Preferences from the dropdown.

Once inside the Billing Preferences page, you can update your billing information and enable auto-upgrading.

Enable Email Subscription Auto Upgrade or SMS Subscription Auto Upgrade to automatically have your email or SMS plan upgraded if you need more sending capacity in the future. You can choose to turn on this setting for your email plan, SMS plan, or both.

When this setting is turned on, we will upgrade your subscription for you once you are at your plan’s limits for either SMS or email. This way you don’t have to worry about being unable to send in the future. If this does occur, we will place your account on a higher plan tier. We will email you an invoice with each auto-upgrade as well.

To opt into auto-upgrade, toggle the button next to Email Subscription Auto Upgrade or SMS Subscription Auto Upgrade.

Once you have confirmed your updates, click Update Plan Settings.

Enable Auto-Upgrades When Changing Your Email Plan

Via Your Plan Checkout

If you choose at any time to adjust your email plan, you can also adjust your auto-upgrade preferences by visiting Account > Billing > Email Plans.

Navigate to your account name in the upper-righthand corner, and click on Account from the dropdown.
Then click on Billing in the menu, and choose Email Plans from the dropdown.

You will then be brought to your Email Plans page where you can choose the plan that best fits your needs. Click Change next to your chosen plan.

On your checkout page, you can review the plan you are moving to, as well as toggle on the option for auto-upgrade.

If you choose the additional option below for Email Subscription Auto Upgrade, you will be opted in to automatically have your plan upgraded should you need more sending capacity in the future. This means that we will upgrade your subscription for you once you are at your plan limits, and you do not have to worry about being unable to send. If this does occur, we will place your account on a higher plan tier. We will email you an invoice with each auto-upgrade as well.

Click Confirm Subscription to complete the purchase, then continue sending your email campaign.

Via Your Email Campaigns Page

If you are inside the Campaigns tab and you are getting ready to send an email, but are either close to your monthly email sending allotment or do not have capacity left on your plan, you will be prompted to upgrade. If you have already hit your email send allotment for the month, you will not be able to send until you upgrade. Below is an example of when you have already hit your limit.

You can upgrade your plan to a higher plan tier by clicking Upgrade. To also enroll in auto-upgrades for future sends, check the additional Email Subscription Auto-Upgrade option.

If you choose the additional checkbox below for Email Subscription Auto Upgrade, you will be opted in to automatically have your plan upgraded should you need more sending capacity in the future. This means that we will upgrade your subscription for you once you are at your plan limits, and you do not have to worry about being unable to send. If this does occur, we will place your account on a higher plan tier. We will email you an invoice with each auto-upgrade as well.

Click Upgrade to complete the purchase, then continue sending your email campaign.

Via In-App Notifications

In the top navigation, the bell icon symbolizes important Klaviyo plan and account information. Klaviyo sends you notifications when you have utilized most or all of your email plan for the current month. In

these notifications, you have the option to upgrade your plan tier and enroll in auto-upgrades.

This is an example of how one of these in-app notifications may look. Click the icon to expand the notification, then click upgrade to a larger plan.

You will then be brought to your Email Plans page where you can choose the plan that best fits your needs. Click Change next to your chosen plan.

Via the Email Notifications You Receive

Klaviyo sends you notifications when you have utilized most or all of your email plan. In these notifications, you have the option to upgrade your plan tier and enroll in auto- upgrades.

Below is an example of an email notification that you may receive from us. Click Upgrade my plan to go to your account’s Overview page to upgrade your email subscription.

Once on the Overview page, review your current plan, usage to date, and how to upgrade your email plan on the left-hand side. Click on Upgrade Email Plan to open the Email Billing page to complete your subscription changes.

Once on the billing page, you can choose a new plan tier and also toggle on auto-upgrade.

Once you have chosen how you would like to proceed with your upgrade, fill in or update (if needed) the rest of your billing information.

When you are ready, click Confirm Subscription to complete the purchase. You can then send your next email campaign.
