You will learn

Learn how to see the saved versions of a flow, preview a version, restore a version, and copy a version to a new draft flow.

Version history is rolling out gradually. If the history panel does not show restorable versions, version history is not available in your account yet.

Before you begin

  • Klaviyo saves a version of a flow each time you save a change to it. This starts when version history becomes available in your account. You cannot restore changes from before that date. They stay visible in the panel, below the versions. For more information, see How to review a flow's history.
  • To restore a version or copy it to a draft, your user role must let you edit flows. If you do not see Restore or Duplicate as draft, ask an account admin.
  • A version includes the structure and settings of the flow. This includes steps, time delays, splits, filters, A/B tests, and message settings such as the subject line and preview text. A version does not include the content that you edit in an email or SMS template. Changes to drag-and-drop email templates are saved in the template's own version history. For more information, see How to view and restore email template versions.

About flow versions

Klaviyo saves a version when you change a flow in the flow builder, with Composer, or with the API. Klaviyo puts the changes that you make in a 15-minute period into one version. When you choose a winner for an A/B test, Klaviyo also saves a version.

Each version shows:

  • The date and time of the change.
  • The user who made the change. Klaviyo shows the user's email address. Changes from Klaviyo staff show as Klaviyo Support. Some automatic changes, such as an A/B test that picks its winner, show as System. Changes made through the API show as via API when Klaviyo cannot link them to a user.
  • A Composer label, if the change was made with Composer.
  • The number of changes and a list of the changes.

The newest version is labeled Current.

Open a flow's versions

  1. Open the flow.
  2. In the flow header, click the View flow history icon.
  3. The Version history panel opens. The newest versions are at the top.
  4. To see the changes in a version, expand the version. For some changes, such as time delays and filters, click View details to see the old value and the new value.
  5. To see more versions, click Load more at the bottom of the panel.

Preview a previous version

Use View version to look at a version before you restore it. The preview does not change your flow.

  1. In the Version history panel, click the menu on the version.
  2. Click View version. The canvas shows that version. A banner shows “Viewing a previous version — read-only”.
  3. To go back to the current flow, click Close. To restore this version, click Restore.

Restore a previous version

  1. In the Version history panel, click the menu on the version that you want.
  2. Click Restore.
  3. Read the confirmation. Then click Restore. If the restore affects an A/B test, the button shows End test and restore.

When you restore a version:

  • That version becomes the current version of the flow. If the flow is live, Klaviyo sends with the restored version immediately.
  • Klaviyo saves the version that you replaced, so no changes are lost.
  • The restore shows as a new version. Its title is “Restored from” and the date of the version that you restored.
  • Profiles that are already in the flow continue from their current position in the restored flow. If a profile waits at a step that the restore removes, the profile moves to the next step. If there is no next step, the profile exits the flow.

To undo a restore, restore the version from before the restore. A restore does not change the flow's analytics. To compare results before and after a restore, filter the analytics by date range.

Restore a flow that has an A/B test

  • If an A/B test is running in the current flow, the restore ends the test. Klaviyo does not choose a winner. The test results stay available in reporting.
  • If the version that you restore had a running A/B test, the test comes back as a draft. The message can stay live and send without the test. A restore does not start a test. To test again, start the test.
  • If an A/B test was set up but not started, the restore removes it.

Klaviyo shows a warning before the restore when an A/B test is affected.

Copy a version to a new draft flow

Use Duplicate as draft to make a new flow from a version. Your current flow does not change.

  1. In the Version history panel, click the menu on the version.
  2. Click Duplicate as draft.
  3. Enter a name for the new flow. The name cannot start with =, + or @, and cannot be longer than 255 characters.
  4. Click Continue. A message shows “Draft created”. To open the new flow, click Open.

The new flow is a separate draft. It does not include the history or the analytics of the original flow.

See a Composer conversation

If a change was made with Composer, the version has a Composer label. To open the Composer conversation that made the change, click the menu on the version, then click View chat. You will only be able to view the Composer chat if you initiated the conversation.

Filter versions

Click the filter icon. Then filter by action, by type of change (created, updated, or deleted), by user, or by time range. When a filter or search is on, the older changes below the banner do not show.

Troubleshooting

  • “No versions have been saved for this flow yet.” Nobody has changed the flow since version history became available. Klaviyo saves a version after the next change. New flows always start with a “Created flow” version.
  • “We couldn't restore this version. Please try again.” Try again. If the error continues, contact Support and give the flow ID and the version date.
  • “We couldn't load this version. Please try again.” Close the preview and try again.
  • “We couldn't duplicate this version to a new draft. Please try again.” Try again. If the error continues, contact Support and give the flow ID and the version date.
  • Restore is not available for a version with an earlier A/B test. If Klaviyo cannot identify the A/B test that the version finished with, it cannot put back the winning content, so it blocks the restore. Choose a different version.
  • The restored flow shows an alert about a deleted list, segment, or flow. The version uses an item that was deleted after the version was saved. Replace the item in the flow.
  • Older changes do not have Restore. Changes from before version history became available are below the “Improved version history” banner in the panel. You can see them, but you cannot restore them.
