What's the difference between downgrading to free, canceling, and closing an account? What's the difference between downgrading to free, canceling, and closing an account?
All options stop future payments so you're not billed going forward. The main differences between these options are that:
- Downgrading to free allows you to keep using all the features in Klaviyo.
- Canceling a plan stops payment for that plan as well as any plan-specific features (e.g., canceling SMS turns all SMS messages off, but emails still send).
- Canceling an account keeps your data but all features are turned off.
- Closing your account deletes all data within the account and removes all account access.

Downgrade to free
If you want to use a free plan in Klaviyo, you first need to cancel.
- If you have 2 or more plans, canceling 1 automatically sets it to the free plan.
- Example: if you pay for both SMS and reviews, canceling your SMS plan automatically sets it to the free plan.
- If you want every plan in your account to be on the free version, cancel your account and then reactivate it as free.
After canceling your subscriptions, you still have the choice to reactivate as a free account. In doing so, you can regain access to many core Klaviyo features but will be restricted to a free plan’s sending limits rather than your original paid subscription.
Note that upon reactivating as a free account, you will still have access to your data from your former paid account.
- Navigate back to Billing.
- Go to the Preference tab.
- Scroll down to the Reactivate your account section.
- Click Reactivate to free.
- Confirm your reactivation.
