How to add and manage WhatsApp phone numbers

Add and manage multiple WhatsApp phone numbers in Klaviyo, then assign each number to the countries it should serve.

You can connect more than one phone number to your WhatsApp Business account (WABA). Klaviyo routes messages based on the country code of each recipient's profile phone number.

If you don't have a WhatsApp number yet, start with How to get a phone number for WhatsApp.

Before you begin

Before you add another phone number, review these requirements:

  • Connect your WhatsApp Business account to Klaviyo before you add more numbers.
  • Meta determines how many phone numbers you can connect to your WhatsApp Business account.

Add a phone number

Add each new phone number to the same WhatsApp Business account you already connected to Klaviyo.

  1. Select your account name in the lower left corner.
  2. Go to WhatsApp settings > Sender information > WhatsApp number.
  3. Add a number and complete the embedded signup.
  4. When prompted, select the same WhatsApp Business account already connected to Klaviyo. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. Wait for Meta to approve the number. After the number is approved and ready to send, you can map it to countries.[IMAGE: Approved WhatsApp phone number ready to be mapped to countries]

Map a number to countries

During setup, assign each number to the countries it should serve.

  • One number can serve multiple countries.
  • Only one number can serve each country.
  • Klaviyo uses these mappings to determine which number sends and receives messages.

You can change a number's country mappings at any time in WhatsApp settings > Sender information > WhatsApp number.

How routing works

Klaviyo uses the country code on each recipient's profile phone number to determine which WhatsApp number to use.

  • Outbound: Klaviyo sends the message from the number mapped to the recipient's country.
  • Inbound: Klaviyo uses the number mapped to the recipient's country for replies. For example, if you map a number to Germany, Klaviyo uses your Germany number for a recipient with a German country code.
  • Unmapped countries: Klaviyo uses your default number for any country you haven't mapped to a specific number.

When you change a country mapping, Klaviyo immediately updates the number used to send and receive messages for that country.

Set a default number

When you have more than one live number, one number acts as the default. Klaviyo uses the default for every country without a specific number mapping.

  • Your first number becomes the default automatically.
  • You can change the default at any time in WhatsApp settings > Sender information > WhatsApp number

Changing the default number immediately changes routing for all unmapped countries.

Manage your phone numbers

Use WhatsApp settings > Sender information > WhatsApp number to manage your connected numbers.

From this page, you can:

  • View all connected numbers and their statuses.
  • Edit each number's display name.
  • Change the countries a number serves.
  • Change your default number.
  • Remove a number. When you remove a number, Klaviyo routes the countries it served through your default number.
