Why is the number of checkout started events in Klaviyo fewer than the number of abandoned checkout events in Shopify?

Klaviyo's checkout started event is different than Shopify's abandoned checkout event. Klaviyo tracks Shopify’s checkout started events rather than Shopify’s abandoned checkout events.
Checkout started is triggered by a customer entering their contact and shopping information on the first page of a Shopify checkout and then clicking continue. Abandoned checkout occurs when a customer leaves checkout after the first page without completing their purchase. Although a customer may be logged into their Shopify account when they abandon a checkout, a customer email address is not necessarily captured during an abandoned checkout.
Since abandoned checkout is different than checkout started, sometimes there are more abandoned checkouts in Shopify than there are Checkout Started events in Klaviyo.
