Learn how to enable SMS in Klaviyo.
Before you begin
You must turn on SMS before you can do any of the following:
- Collect SMS subscribers
- Import SMS contacts
- Send SMS or MMS messages
You must also set up your sending number. This can be a:
- Toll-free number or short code for the US and Canada
- Branded sender ID or long code for Australia
- Branded sender ID, long code, or short code for UK
- Short code for New Zealand
Klaviyo will provide you with a toll-free number and branded sender ID; you simply have to complete the SMS wizard to get these numbers. If you want to use another number, finish this setup process first so you can start collecting consent and then request the other number. For a comparison of the numbers, please see:

Turn on SMS
If you didn't set up SMS during the setup wizard, you can turn it on in the SMS settings page.
- Click on the name of your organization in the upper right-hand corner.
- Navigate to Settings > SMS.
- Click Set up SMS for free.
- In the modal that pop ups, select the countries where you want to use SMS (check all that apply):
- United States
- Canada
- United Kingdom
- Australia
- New Zealand
- Click Next.
- Review your sending numbers.
- For the US and Canada: fill out information to get a toll-free number.
- This number will be used in both the US and Canada.
- You must fill out the following information so that Klaviyo can provide you with a toll-free number and then submit it for verification.
- Do not send until this number is verified.
- For New Zealand: the only option is to request a short code.
- This number takes 5–6 weeks to be approved.
- For the UK and Australia: create a branded sender ID.
- Note that this sender ID will be used in both the UK and Australia.
- You can customize this sender ID to suit your needs.
- Branded sender IDs do not have a verification process, so you can start sending with them immediately.

Branded sender IDs must:

- Be between 3-11 characters
- Contain at least one letter
- Not have any special characters (e.g., ~, &, etc.)

- For the US and Canada: fill out information to get a toll-free number.
- Click Next.
- Choose to create or link to a mobile terms of service.

If you’re creating a mobile terms of service:

Add in your company’s name and support email address, then click Next.

Choose what promotional and transactional messages you plan to send, then click Next.

Add a link to your privacy policy.
Note: Make sure your privacy policy has been updated for SMS. -
Check the box to confirm your privacy policy includes SMS.
- Click Next.

If you’re linking to an existing mobile terms of service:

Confirm your company’s name.

Add a link to your mobile terms of service.

Add a link to your privacy policy.
Note: Make sure your privacy policy has been updated for SMS. -
Check the box to confirm your privacy policy includes SMS.

Click Done.

- Choose one of the following next steps:
- Create a signup form (best for those who are new to SMS).
- Upload a list of previous SMS subscribers (best for those switching from another SMS provider).
- Click Next.
Outcome
You'll now be able to start collecting SMS subscribers and sending them text messages.
