Link type

Format

Action

Email

mailto:youremail@example.com

Clicking a link with this address opens the recipient's preferred email app and creates a draft email with your address in the To field.

SMS

sms:+19999999999

Clicking a link with this address opens the recipient's text messaging app with a draft text addressed to your phone number.

Phone number

tel:123-456-7890

Clicking a link with this address opens the recipient's default phone call app with your phone number ready to dial.

Limitations

These links are only supported for certain ISPs and devices. For example, SMS links (i.e., sms:+19999999999) are supported in Apple Mail but are not fully supported in all versions of Gmail, Yahoo, or Outlook. Additionally, recipients who open an SMS or phone number link on a desktop, rather than a mobile device, may not have a messaging or calling app installed. For this reason, it's important to make sure your phone number or email address is visible in the message you send, so recipients can manually type it in if necessary.
