How to Collect SMS Consent at Checkout on WooCommerce

Overview

One of the best ways to grow your SMS subscriber list is to collect consent when someone checks out on your site. Klaviyo’s integration with WooCommerce allows you to sync consent when someone enters their phone number, accepts SMS marketing, and then places an order. Double opt-in does apply, so those entering their phone number will need to confirm their subscription.

This article explains how to enable consent at checkout for WooCommerce. This process should take around 5–10 minutes to complete.

You must be on version 2.4.0 or higher of Klaviyo’s WooCommerce plugin in order to enable consent at checkout.

Before Getting Started

Before you begin collecting consent at checkout, make sure that you have set up SMS in Klaviyo. If you haven’t already, go to Setting > SMS and then click Set Up SMS. For more information, read how to set up Klaviyo SMS.

Further, you will need to include language around your SMS marketing efforts in your terms of service and privacy policy, as it is required by compliance guidelines. Check out this example of a mobile terms of service for inspiration.

Enabling SMS Consent at Checkout for WooCommerce

The only changes you need to make to collect SMS consent at checkout are done in WooCommerce

Go into your WooCommerce account. Click Plugins on the left-hand side. Locate Klaviyo in the list and click Settings.

Under Subscribe contacts at checkout, add in your list ID where you want to send SMS subscribers. If you also collect email subscribers, use a different list than for your SMS subscribers.

Scroll down to the SMS section, check the box labelled Subscribe contacts to SMS marketing. This will provide an option for shoppers to agree to receiving text message marketing from your brand.

You can edit the text for the SMS opt-in checkbox text and SMS disclosure text fields, which will appear on the checkout page. The default for the first is: Subscribe to SMS updates.

The default disclosure text reads as follows. Update the information in brackets with your company's specific details.

By checking this box and entering your phone number above, you consent to receive marketing text messages (such as [promotion codes] and [cart reminders]) from [company name] at the number provided, including messages sent by autodialer. Consent is not a condition of any purchase. Message and data rates may apply. Message frequency varies. You can unsubscribe at any time by replying STOP or clicking the unsubscribe link (where available) in one of our messages. View our Privacy Policy [link] and Terms of Service [link].

Although you cannot hyperlink, it is strongly encouraged to include direct links to your Privacy Policy and TOS pages within the text of your message. For example:

View our Privacy Policy (https://www.klaviyo.com/legal/privacy-policy) and Terms of Service (https://www.klaviyo.com/legal/terms-of-service).

Once you’re ready, click Save Settings in the lower left. This will update your checkout page to look similar to the one below:

Consent will now sync to Klaviyo after someone inputs their phone number, selects the checkbox to accept SMS marketing, and finishes placing their order (consent will not be synced until the order is placed). This will help you quickly grow your SMS list so that you can expand your reach on this channel.
