Getting started with Klaviyo Starter in Shopify

Learn how to set up Klaviyo directly inside your Shopify admin so you can collect subscribers, send automated emails, and track the sales your marketing drives, all without leaving Shopify.

Before you begin

Requirements:

• You must be the store owner of your Shopify store, signed in with a verified email address. Staff and collaborator accounts can't complete setup inside Shopify (see the note below).

Note: Already using Klaviyo? If your Klaviyo account is already connected to this Shopify store, the app skips setup and takes you straight to your dashboard. If you use Klaviyo but haven't connected this store, select Already using Klaviyo? Add Shopify to your Klaviyo account on the welcome screen instead of starting setup.

Install the Klaviyo app

1. In the Shopify App Store, search for Klaviyo and click Install.
2. Approve the permissions Shopify asks for. Klaviyo uses these to sync your customers, orders, and store activity.
3. The app opens inside your Shopify admin.

Connect Klaviyo to your storefront

Sign-up forms and on-site tracking (like knowing when a shopper starts a checkout) require the Klaviyo app embed in your theme.

1. On the Connect Klaviyo to your storefront screen, click Connect with storefront. This opens your Shopify theme editor in a new tab with the Klaviyo embed ready to enable.
2. In the theme editor, turn on Klaviyo Onsite Javascript and click Save.
3. Return to the Klaviyo tab. When the app confirms the embed, you'll see an App embed enabled message and move to the next step automatically.

Note: If the app says it couldn't confirm the embed, Shopify sometimes takes a moment to register theme changes. Make sure you clicked Save in the theme editor, then return and click Try again. You are able to skip this step and enable the setting later.

Create your account

1. On the welcome screen, review Klaviyo's Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, then check the consent box. The Start setup button stays disabled until you do.
2. If Shopify doesn't have a complete business address for your store, a short form appears prefilled with what Shopify does have. Street address, city, and country are required.
3. Click Start setup. Klaviyo creates your account using your Shopify details: your organization name (or your shop name if blank), your store's website, and your store owner email as the default sender address.

Note: Only the store owner with a verified email can create the account this way. If you're a staff member or collaborator, or your email isn't verified with Shopify, you'll see a Get Started in Klaviyo button instead, which takes you to klaviyo.com to finish signing up. Your details are prefilled, and your account will connect back to this store.

Complete guided setup

After your account is created, Klaviyo walks you through three steps that give your store a working marketing foundation:

1. Publish a sign-up form to start collecting subscribers.
2. Set a welcome email live so new subscribers hear from you right away.
3. Set an abandoned checkout email live to recover shoppers who don't finish buying.

See Understanding guided setup for what each step creates. You can pause at any point; when you come back, setup resumes exactly where you left off.

Outcome

You've now installed Klaviyo, connected it to your storefront, and set live a sign-up form, a welcome email, and an abandoned checkout email. As shoppers subscribe and buy, your dashboard fills in with results.
