How to use Shopify with Composer
You will learn
Learn how to use the native Shopify connector in Composer to check your store’s products, inventory, and orders, and make supported changes in Shopify. For example, you can check stock for a promotion, choose products, and create a collection before drafting the campaign in Klaviyo.
Before you begin
You need access to Composer and a Shopify store connected to the Klaviyo account you’re using. If your store isn’t connected, follow Getting started with Shopify.
The connector uses your existing Shopify integration. You don’t need to create a custom connector or enter a Shopify API token in Composer. If you manage multiple Klaviyo accounts, switch to the account connected to the store you want to use.
The actions available depend on the permissions granted by your store. A connection that can retrieve product information may still need updated permissions before Composer can change products or create collections.
Understand what the connector does
Your Shopify integration syncs store data to Klaviyo for use in profiles, segmentation, flows, and reporting. The native connector also gives Composer tools to retrieve information directly from Shopify and perform supported actions in your store.
You can use it to:
- Find products and review descriptions, variants, prices, and tags.
- Check inventory, including quantities for a specific variant or location.
- Look up orders and review payment, fulfillment, and tracking information.
- Create collections from selected products or from product selection rules.
- Update supported product details, tags, metafields, and variant prices.
- Create order-wide percentage or fixed-amount discount codes.
A request to inspect information doesn’t change your store. A request to update a product, create a collection, or create a discount does. Composer only writes to Shopify when you explicitly ask it to, and it does not ask for a separate confirmation before making the change. When you want to explore an idea first, ask Composer to show its recommendation without applying it. Review the proposal, then send a separate instruction to apply the change when you are ready.
The connector provides specific tools rather than every feature in Shopify. To review the tools available to your account, open Customize > Connectors in Composer, select Shopify, and expand its tool count.
Check or update your Shopify connection
Manage Shopify access through your Klaviyo integration settings. In Composer’s connector settings, Shopify’s Manage settings action opens those settings. You can also open Integrations in Klaviyo and select Shopify.
If your store needs additional permissions:
- Open the Shopify integration settings in Klaviyo.
- Click Update in the notice asking you to update the integration. You can also click Update Settings to start the settings update flow.
- Complete the Shopify authorization prompts and review the requested access.
- When you return to Klaviyo, confirm that the correct Klaviyo account and Shopify store are shown, then click Update Integration.
- Return to your Composer conversation and ask it to try the request again.
If you can’t update the integration, ask someone with permission to manage integrations in Klaviyo to help. The person completing authorization also needs permission to approve the requested access in Shopify.
After setup, start with a request that retrieves information, such as “Show me the Shopify product details for Everyday Tote.” Check that Composer found the intended product before continuing with a change.
Plan a promotion using your store data
The following example moves from product research to a collection and a campaign draft. Replace the example tag, product names, and inventory threshold with details from your store.
Find products and check stock
Start by defining the selection you want Composer to investigate:
Find active Shopify products tagged “gift.” Show their prices and available inventory by variant at our main warehouse. Suggest products for a holiday gift guide, and flag variants with fewer than 20 units. Don’t change anything yet.
Review the matching products, then narrow the selection in the same conversation. A product can be active while its variants are sold out. If your promotion features a particular size or color, check that variant rather than relying on the product’s combined inventory. Name the fulfillment location when stock at that location affects your decision.
For an order investigation, give similarly specific criteria. For example: “Find Shopify orders placed October 1–7, 2026 with the tag holiday-preview. Summarize their payment and fulfillment statuses, and state the filters you used.”
Choose how to organize the collection
You can request a collection containing a fixed selection of products or a collection whose membership follows rules.
Use a fixed selection when you want to choose exactly which products appear in the promotion:
Create a Shopify collection called “Holiday gift guide” containing the Everyday Tote, Travel Pouch, and Canvas Organizer we just reviewed. Sort the products by price from low to high.
Use rules when you want Shopify to maintain the selection as matching products change:
Create a Shopify collection called “Gifts under $50.” Include products tagged “gift” with a variant price below $50 in our store currency. Require both conditions, and sort by price from low to high.
For a collection based on rules, state whether products must match all conditions or any condition. That choice changes which products qualify. To add or remove individual products from an existing collection, use a collection with a manually selected product list; rule-based membership is controlled by its conditions.
Collections created through the connector start unpublished. Review the included products or rules in Shopify, then publish the collection to the appropriate sales channels when it’s ready. Creating the collection doesn’t make it available on your storefront.
Continue with a campaign draft
Once you’ve reviewed the collection and its storefront destination, continue the conversation:
Draft an email campaign featuring the Holiday gift guide collection. Use the product details we reviewed, link to the collection, and don’t include a discount.
Review the copy, images, links, audience, and send settings before using the campaign. Creating a Shopify collection and drafting a Klaviyo campaign are separate actions. Check the collection in Shopify and the campaign draft in Klaviyo.
Update product information
You can ask Composer to update supported product fields, including the title, description, product type, vendor, status, and search engine listing information. It can also add or remove product tags, set product metafields, and update variant prices.
For copy changes, separate the proposed wording from the update:
Show me the current Shopify description for Everyday Tote. Suggest a clearer version using only facts already in the product information, and wait for my review before updating it.
After reviewing the wording, ask Composer to apply the version you chose. Open the product in Shopify to check the saved description.
Keep these details in mind for other updates:
- For prices, identify the exact variants and amounts in your store currency. The connector can set a compare-at price, but it can’t remove one. To clear a compare-at price when ending a sale, use Shopify admin.
- For search engine listing updates, provide both the title and description. Sending only one of these fields clears the other.
- For metafields, identify the existing field and the intended value. Metafields store additional product information, such as care instructions, and their values must match the field’s defined type.
- Changing a product’s status to draft or archived takes it off the storefront. Request a status change only when that is the result you intend.
Create a discount code
Composer can create an order-wide discount code for all customers, using a percentage or a fixed amount in your store currency. Specify the code, amount, start and end times, time zone, and any minimum subtotal or usage limits.
Create an order-wide discount code GIFT15 for 15% off orders with a minimum subtotal of $75 in our store currency. Start it November 20, 2026 at 9 a.m. Eastern Time and end it November 23, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Limit it to 500 uses total and 1 use per customer.
Review the discount in Shopify before sharing the code. Check its value, active dates, minimum subtotal, and usage restrictions. This action creates a code available to all customers; requesting a campaign for a particular segment doesn’t restrict that Shopify code to the segment.
Check the result and resolve problems
After a request that changes Shopify, read Composer’s response for the completed action and any errors, then check the affected record in Shopify. A recommendation in the conversation doesn’t mean a change has been applied. Some collection membership changes continue processing after the initial request, so check the resulting collection before using it in a promotion.
Composer can read products but can’t make a change
The store may be missing the permission needed for that action. Update the Shopify integration, complete authorization, and ask Composer to retry. If it still fails, check the connector’s available tools and the error in the conversation. Complete unsupported actions in Shopify admin.
Composer can’t find a product
Provide the exact product name or SKU and check that you’re using the Klaviyo account connected to the correct store. Catalog search returns active products by default. If you’re investigating a discontinued product, ask Composer to include archived products. Draft and unlisted products aren’t returned by this catalog search.
A new collection isn’t on the storefront
Collections created through the connector start unpublished. Open the collection in Shopify, review its products, and publish it to the relevant sales channels before linking to it in a campaign.
