You will learn

Learn how to use Composer to review Meta advertising across Facebook and Instagram. You will trace a result from campaign to ad set to ad, check whether an ad is actually delivering, and relate performance to the creative your audience saw.

For syncing custom audiences or lead ad subscribers with Klaviyo, follow Getting started with Meta Ads. This article covers reading advertising results in Composer.

Before you begin

The Meta Ads connector reads ad accounts, campaigns, ad sets, ads, creatives, budgets, statuses, and performance. It does not change targeting, budgets, ad status, or creative. Apply any decisions from your review in Meta Ads Manager.

You need a Meta account with access to the ad account you want to review. If you manage several brands, confirm the ad account at the start of the conversation so results from different brands do not get combined.

Connect Meta Ads

  1. In Composer, open Customize > Connectors.
  2. Select Meta Ads under Available connectors, then click Install.
  3. Complete Meta sign-in and authorize the requested access in the new tab.
  4. Return to Connectors and confirm Meta Ads appears under Your connectors > Enabled.

Open Meta Ads and expand the tool count to review the available actions. If authorization expires, reconnect the app from Connectors. For detailed connection management, see How to connect and use apps in Composer.

Start with the account and reporting level

Meta organizes advertising into campaigns, ad sets, and ads. Review campaigns to understand a broad initiative, ad sets to distinguish groups within it, and individual ads to examine specific creative. State which level you want rather than treating them as interchangeable.

Show the Meta ad accounts you can access. For our Winter Store account, confirm its ID, currency, and time zone. Then report campaign performance for October 15–28, 2026 with spend, impressions, reach, clicks, and recorded purchases.

Check that the response names the intended account and period. If Composer returns only the highest-spend campaigns or another limited selection, ask it to distinguish that selection from an account total.

Choose one campaign to investigate further. Keep the same dates as you move down to its ad sets and ads so the results describe the same period.

Check delivery before judging an ad

An ad’s configured status and its actual delivery status can differ. If an ad you expected to run has little or no activity, ask Composer to check both rather than assuming the creative performed poorly.

For the “Winter collection launch” campaign, show each ad set and ad’s configured status and effective delivery status. Identify items that are set to active but are not delivering. Report the statuses you can see without guessing the cause.

Use the returned effective status to decide what to inspect in Meta Ads Manager. An ad that did not deliver is a different problem from an ad that delivered but generated few purchases. If the result does not explain the cause, check the affected item in Meta Ads Manager rather than treating a possible explanation as a diagnosis.

Compare individual ads with their creative

For ads that delivered, ask for performance at the ad level and the associated creative. This lets you connect a result with the message and image or video reference used by that ad.

Within that campaign, compare individual ads for October 15–28, 2026. Show spend, impressions, clicks, recorded purchases, and purchase return on ad spend where available. Include each ad’s name and ID, its headline and copy when available, and its creative reference. Flag missing metrics.

Review the creative details alongside the metrics. Ask Composer to state when a creative field is unavailable; not every ad has the same fields. A creative reference or thumbnail also does not establish that Composer has watched a video or inspected every part of an asset.

Interpret missing purchases and revenue carefully

Meta can return several action types, such as clicks, leads, and purchases. Tell Composer which action you want to evaluate. Do not interpret a sum of different action types as a purchase count.

Result

How to interpret it

Purchases and purchase value are returned

Use the stated purchase measure for the period and keep it consistent across ads.

Leads are returned but purchases are absent

A lead-based comparison is possible, but label it as leads. It does not substitute for purchase revenue or purchase return on ad spend.

No purchase entry is returned

Say no purchases were recorded in the returned result. That alone does not prove purchase tracking is broken.

No delivery data is returned for the period

Check the dates, account, scope, and delivery status before drawing a performance conclusion.

If purchase value is unavailable, do not ask Composer to estimate return on ad spend from another action. Instead, choose a separate question the available data can answer, such as comparing cost per lead.

Prepare the next creative review

Use the analysis to develop a testable proposal rather than assuming that the ad with the most clicks is the best choice for every objective.

Summarize which ads merit a closer creative review based on the results we just checked. Separate observed differences from hypotheses about the headline or imagery. Suggest what evidence we need before changing the campaign.

Keep the ad set context in view when comparing creative. Ads can run in different circumstances, so the comparison can identify a question to investigate without proving that the creative alone caused the difference. Review proposed changes with the person responsible for the account and apply them in Meta Ads Manager.

Resolve common problems

The ad account is missing

Confirm that the Meta login you authorized can access the intended account. Give Composer the account name or ID and ask it to identify which accessible account matches. If it cannot access that account, resolve the access issue before using another account’s results.

Composer cannot change an ad or budget

The connector is read-only. Use the findings to make the change in Meta Ads Manager. Reauthorization can restore access, but it does not add write actions.

A comparison is incomplete

Ask Composer to state its reporting level, dates, filters, and result limits. Request the missing part explicitly. Keep a campaign total separate from its ad set or ad rows so the same performance is not counted twice.
