Learn why answer engine optimization (AEO) matters, how it relates to search engine optimization (SEO), and how to improve your content. Use Klaviyo Reviews to find and answer shopper questions, and apply the same content principles to Customer Agent on your site.

Quick definitions

Term

What it means

Example goal

SEO: search engine optimization

Improve how people discover your pages through search engines.

Your backpack page appears in relevant search results.

AEO: answer engine optimization

Improve how your brand or content appears in direct answers from search and AI services.

An answer about commuter backpacks mentions your product or cites your page.

GEO: generative engine optimization

Make content useful as a source for AI-generated responses.

An AI comparison uses your product specifications.

AEO and GEO overlap, and people use the terms differently. This article uses AEO for improving your presence in answers. A mention names your brand; a citation identifies a source, often with a link. See HubSpot’s AEO guide for more background.

Why AEO is important

Shoppers can ask AI services to recommend or compare products before they visit your store. AEO helps you prepare useful information for that stage of their research. Klaviyo’s AI search guide explains this shift in product discovery.

  • Discovery: A shopper researching a need, such as a backpack for a rainy commute, may encounter your brand in an answer.
  • Accurate comparisons: Clear specifications and limitations give services source material to describe which needs your product meets.
  • Visibility before a click: A shopper can see a brand mention or citation while comparing options, even if they don’t visit the linked page.

Treat AEO as part of your existing content and SEO work. No content format or Klaviyo feature guarantees that an external answer engine will recommend your brand.

How to optimize for answer engines

Your goal is to make your public website easy for answer engines to find, understand, and use to answer real customer questions in context. A shopper should be able to ask their preferred AI assistant a question and get a useful answer informed by your content, without having to search your website themselves.

Work toward this by publishing clear answers where they are most useful: product details and reviews beside the product, comparisons in buying guides, and shipping or return terms on linked policy pages. Klaviyo Reviews can help you identify and publish customer questions and experiences. Customer Agent can use your content to answer shoppers directly on your site.

What to improve on your website

1. Identify the questions your content needs to answer.

Review product questions, reviews, and support conversations for recurring concerns about fit, compatibility, use, care, or delivery. Write each concern as a plain-language question and identify the page that should answer it. Prioritize questions that could change a buying decision.

2. Write answers that explain suitability and limits.

Answer the question in the opening sentence, then provide verified details and exceptions. Include the context a shopper needs to judge whether a product meets their needs. Use question headings, short paragraphs, specification lists, and comparison tables.

For example, for “Will this backpack protect my laptop on a rainy commute?”, explain the laptop compartment dimensions and water-resistance limits. Give guidance about protective cases or rain covers only when you can verify it.

3. Put the information where people and agents can find it.

Publish product-specific answers on the relevant product page. Link to full policies and comparison guides when more detail is needed. Keep essential facts available as page text, rather than only inside images, private emails, or chat conversations.

4. Keep pages accessible and consistent.

Work with your website administrator or SEO team to check crawler access and internal links. Keep specifications, prices, and policies current across pages, and ensure any structured data matches the visible content. These changes happen in your website platform and its settings. See Google’s guidance for AI features in Search.

How Klaviyo can help

Use Klaviyo Reviews to find unanswered questions.

Open Reviews > Q&A and look for repeated questions or missing details. Answer and publish relevant questions, then use those patterns to improve your product descriptions or FAQs in your website editor. Learn how to answer customer questions.

Display reviews and Q&A beside the product.

Use the Product reviews widget to show customer feedback and published answers on the relevant product page. In its Review list settings, enable the Q&A button and tab and Store reply, then publish your changes. Check the live page to confirm shoppers can see the questions and your answers. Learn how to customize review widgets.

Collect context about real product use.

Add a custom product review question such as “What do you use this backpack for?” with choices such as commuting, travel, and hiking. This helps collect the context other shoppers need to evaluate a product. Enable custom-question filters so visitors can find relevant experiences. Learn how to create custom review questions.

Use Customer Agent to answer questions on your site.

In Customer Agent > Knowledge, review the product pages, FAQs, and policies available to your agent. Add missing sources, refresh updated content, and test representative shopper questions to check that answers reflect your current information. Learn how to add and manage content.

Use gaps in those answers to improve your public pages as well as Customer Agent’s knowledge. Publishing an answer on your website makes it available beyond an individual conversation; adding it only to a private knowledge source does not make it public.

Klaviyo supports collecting customer insights, publishing onsite reviews and Q&A, and answering shoppers through Customer Agent. Your website’s technical accessibility and external answer engines’ source selection are managed separately. A visible widget does not establish that every crawler can read it, and using these tools does not guarantee a mention or citation.

Check whether your changes help

  • Content accuracy: Confirm the live page and Customer Agent tests give the correct information.
  • External visibility: Try a consistent set of shopper questions. Record the service, date, mentions, citations, and factual errors. Treat responses as samples, not an overall visibility score.
  • Business outcomes: Review referral traffic and resulting purchases alongside those samples. Google includes AI feature traffic in overall Web reporting in Search Console, so that total does not isolate AEO results. See Google’s measurement guidance.
